What is Theyyam?
Theyyam is a centuries-old ritual art form from North Malabar, mainly the Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala. It is performed at sacred groves and village shrines called kavus. During the performance, the artist is believed to embody the deity, and devotees come forward to receive blessings directly from the Theyyam.
Why the visuals are so powerful
- Face painting: bold patterns in red, yellow, black and white, often taking hours to complete.
- The headdress (mudi): huge, intricate crowns made from bamboo, palm fronds and cloth.
- Costume and ornaments: layered red skirts, silver ornaments and flame-like details.
- Fire and rhythm: many Theyyams are performed with flaming torches to the beat of the chenda drum.

When is Theyyam season?
Theyyam season usually runs from around October to May, with performances held at different kavus across North Malabar. If you're travelling to Kannur, check local temple calendars before you go.
